He learns that she saved the wedding dress she had been planning to wear when she married Graham; Moushumi explains that she wants to have the dress dyed. When Moushumi travels to a conference in Paris, Gogol accompanies her. Gogol and Moushumi date for about a year before they get married. They move into a luxurious apartment on Third Avenue, and they start to settle into their married lives. In the spring, Moushumi Gogol and Moushumi wake up to her mother's phone call: it is the couple's first wedding anniversary. Lahiri's narrator, taking up Moushumi's thoughts, tracks the events of the intervening year, during which Moushumi has passed her qualifying exams for her doctorate, and settled even more into married life.
